What is Circo ABQ?

Circo ABQ is an intensive 4 week circus arts learning opportunity for young people between the ages of 7 - 13. Each summer, students train with national and international circus professionals from basic to advanced circus arts in a bilingual, physically intensive and artistically rigorous curriculum.

Curriculum includes juggling, stilt-walking, unicycling, clowning, aerials, acro-balance, music, and art/costume making, in addition to the exploration of compassion, collaboration, tenacity, inclusion, leadership/mentorship, environmental stewardship and more! The program culminates in two final performances that are open to the public.

While providing circus arts programs to students is our main goal, we also provide leadership/mentorship based roles in our program to build skills and community outside of the circus.

Levels of Mentorship

While Circo ABQ's primary focus is on providing circus training to our students, our program also consists of three levels of mentorship and community building.

Students

Our program centers students between the ages of 7 to 13 who are placed in different "Troupes" and pick between several circus "specializations" to build their skills and work on acts for two performances at the end of the summer program. Students receive hands on direction from professional Teaching Artists with assistance from Junior Troupe and Troupe Leaders.

Junior Troupe Leaders

Once our students age out of the program, they can apply to be a Junior Troupe Leader whose roles are to continue building their circus skills while also developing leadership skills through staff trainings, mentorships with their Troupe Leads, and one on one mentorship with Administrative Staff.

Troupe Leaders

Troupe Leaders are in charge of their own troupes that typically consists of two other Troupe Leads and one or two Jr. Troupe Leaders. Troupe Leaders work together to ensure students are engaging with their specializations, receiving assistance, and following the program schedule. They also mentor Jr. Troupe Leads while receiving one on one mentorship from Administrative Staff.

Our Mantras

Our goal is to build community with respect, to safely develop and deepen our skills, explore culture, create performance, and inspire a sense of wonder and magic. Circo Latino is guided by our seven “Circo Mantras” with a bonus eighth!

Our Mission Statement
